Three takeaways from Express camp: Day 5

SAN ANTONIO – Playmakers on offense and defense stood out on Day 5 at Memphis Express camp at the Star Soccer Complex.

On the day Hines Ward, the head of football development for The Alliance of American Football showed up to practice, the wide receivers and defensive backs put on a show and competed in front of the two-time Super Bowl champion and former All-Pro NFL wide receiver.

Here are the three takeaways from practice this afternoon.

  1. Former University of Memphis defensive back Jahmahl Pardner was the top player from practice with three pass breakups and an interception to end the day in 11-on-11 drills. The former Tiger is making a name for himself at Express camp and wants to stand out not only to his coaches, but for the city that helped build him to who he is. “The University of Memphis adopted me,” Pardner said. “They gave me another opportunity when this game could’ve been over and the Memphis Express is doing the same thing. I love Memphis.”
  2. Wide receiver Reece Horn stood out among the playmakers towards the end of practice. Quarterback Christian Hackenberg hit Horn on a 45-yard go-route down the right sideline. Horn made a leaping catch by wrapping his arms around the defenders head and reeled in the catch. “I just come out here and work and know where I need to be in certain situations,” Horn said. “You just want to step up and make plays and that’s why I’m here. I just want to show the offense and to show our coaching staff that I’m here to win a spot.”
  3. Quarterback Zach Mettenberger had a good day throwing the football in 11-on-11 drills and in red zone packages. Mettenberger connected with tight end Brett Thompson on an out-route for the touchdown during red zone situations. The very next play, Mettenberger connected with tight end Colin Jeter on a shovel pass for a touchdown.

The Memphis Express opens its season on February 10 with a visit to The Birmingham Iron. The Memphis Express opens its home schedule on February 16 hosting the Arizona Hotshots.
